Mislezen en misleiden. Het stemma van de Reis van Sint Brandaan

Abstract - In 1989 Maaike Mulder proposed a two-branch stemma for the extant versions of the twelfth-century Voyage of Saint Brendan, based on her view that the Voyage is a translation of the Latin Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis. In this article it is argued that Hogenhout's proof of literal translation of the Voyage as well as her two-branch stemma are founded on misinterpretation, omission of information and uncritical use of text-critical methods. After a renewed comparison of the extant versions of the Voyage the conclusion is reached that the generally accepted three-branch stemma should be considered correct.
