Over een etymologie van de oude rechtsterm verlagen 'ruilen'

Abstract - In the Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal two possible etymologies for the old legal term verlagen are given: it may have been derived either from the noun lage 'barter' or from the verb lagen 'barter'. Contrary to F. de Tollenaere's claim that only the first possibility is right it is argued that although the question is hard to decide, the second hupothesis seems to be preferable in the light of some new chronological data as well as on the basis of the most plausible interpretation of the prefix ver- in the word.
