De dwaze Salomon en de wijze Vondel. Een interpretatie van Vondels Salomon
Abstract - This article deals with the downfall of the titular hero
in Vondel's tragedy Salomon (1648). The theme of the play can be
defined as 'concupiscense is the ruin of wisdom'. The author's analysis
concerns the elaboration of the theme, the iconographic patterns and emblematic
imagery, and the interrelation between the motto, the play and the poems
following the play. Salomon experiences a development from hero of faith
to the paulinian 'old man'. Seen in the perspective of the sacred history,
this experience causes a breach with the past and the future.
