Abstract - Koefoed's doctoral dissertation in linguistics offers an important set of theoretical reflections concerning the linguistic properties of naming, in particular of those naming acts that lead to the creation of new linguistic signs. This is an aspect of linguistic creativity about which modern structural and generative linguistics does not have much to say. Koefoed's own explorations of the linguistic pragmatics, the semantic dynamics and the socio-cultural aspects of naming acts and word formation in Dutch lead him to a reconsideration of basic concepts of modern linguistics, in particular to a more complex, flexible and dynamic view of the key concept of the linguistic sign, and a correspondingly revised notion of linguistic structure. Rereading the works of early modern masters such as De Saussure and Sapir, Koefoed also advocates a new cultural orientation for the discipline of linguistics.
