J.H. Halbertsma als taalideoloog en taalkundige
Abstract -- The Frisian linguist Joast Hiddes Halbertsma (1789-1869) admired the eighteenth century linguist Tiberius Hemsterhuis and at the same time took an active part in nineteenth century historical-comparative linguistics. His ideas seem to bear resemblance to those of for example Humboldt and Grimm. Besides, Halbertsma's views have a specific background in Frisian language situation and ideology. He proclaims the high value of the spoken vernacular both in itself and as a tool for historical-comparative linguistics. In this way romanticist linguistics and Frisian identity are closely connected in Halbertsma's linguistic concepts.
