Fortuna, Fatum en Providentia Dei in het toneeloeuvre
van Pieter Cornelisz Hooft
Abstract - This article discusses the role of Providence (Providentia
Dei), fate (fatum) and fortune (fortuna) in the dramatic
works of Pieter Cornelisz Hooft, which date from 1600 to 1618. All of his
five tragedies deal with the complex relationship between the freedom of
action on the one, and the omnipotent powers of Providence, fate and fortune
on the other hand. Hooft's conceptions are studied in relation with Boethius'
De consolatione philosophiae, which had been translated into Dutch
some years before bij D.V. Coornhert.
