Abstract -- There is a big gap between the South African and Dutch reactions to J. van Melle's novel Bart Nel. For this phenomenon a number of causes could be pointed out. One of these is the central theme of this article: that for nation- building processes in South Africa literature has been a matter of major concern from 1875 to the present day.
