"Wij hopen langs dezen weg iets bij te dragen tot verbetering van den Smaak en de Kritiek in Nederland". De literaire kritieken van Aarnout Drost
Abstract -- Aarnout Drost (1810-1834) is remembered mainly for Hermingard van de Eikenterpen, one of the first historic novels in Dutch literary history. As a literary critic Drost, who died of tuberculosis at age 24, influenced contemporaries like E.J. Potgieter. In this article Drost's literary ideals are discussed as they manifest themselves through his critiques. It is difficult to establish the exact body of his critiques, since most were published anonymously. In general, Drost's vision fits in with the late 18th-century notion that the power of imagination should be moderated by feelings of delicacy. With Drost, this notion has a religious foundation, which distinguishes him from Potgieter.
