Abstract -- This paper compares the Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse taal (‘History of the Dutch language'), edited by M.C. van den Toorn and others, and published in Amsterdam in 1997, with the five-part Det danske sprogs historie (‘History of the Danish language'), Copenhagen, 1944-1970, written single-handed by the Dane P. Skautrup. Skautrup's one-man authorship has undeniable advantages over the collective setup of the Dutch-Flemish work. The Danish work, moreover, reserves far more space for topics such as dialects, onomastics, word formation, language use, linguistic history and indexes. Even so, the Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse taal is by no means a disappointment.
