Bordewijk en de Nieuwe Zakelijkheid

Abstract - There is no consensus among literary critics and scholars on the question whether the first three novels of F. Bordewijk belong to what is called ‘Nieuwe Zakelijkheid’. The present article analyses the heterogeneous views and shows that the dissent is due to the kind of question posed. This question inevitably leads to a debate on poetics and to normative answers. Instead, an analysis of the texts in question along well-defined parameters of literary history is suggested. This effort is undertaken here with regard to the use of metaphors in Bordewijk’s first novels.
