Het woord bij de daad voegen. Ironie in de Seghelijn van Jherusalem

Abstract - In general, the Middle Dutch epic Seghelijn van Jherusalem used to be regarded as a courtly romance of inferior quality. However, it has recently been argued that, on the contrary, this epic combines a condemnation of traditional courtly values with a strong religious vein. Whilst endorsing the latter view, this article argues that the author of the Seghelijn also had a penchant for irony, which not only manifested itself in the dialogues, but via the person of the narrator as well. For instance, the narrator appears to have employed irony as a means to ‘correct’ his protagonist whenever the latter deviated from the path set out for him by God.
