Waartoe hij zijn dochter slachtte: enargeia in een modern retorische benadering van Vondels Jeptha

Abstract - The twentieth century has witnessed a split in the study of rhetoric. One approach focuses on how meaning is made on the basis of the explicit intentions of authors, the other focuses on meaning production in terms of the signifying potential of language and its users. In Dutch Renaissance studies the first type of rhetorical studies predominates. The situation has proved to be a hindrance with regard to a more comprehensive interpretation of historical texts. In this regard, the assumed antithesis between a classically inspired and modern rhetoric is a false one. The classical concept of enargeia offers opportunities to bring the different types of rhetoric together. The necessity and possibilities of such broadened type of rhetoric are illustrated by an interpretation of Vondels Jeptha.
