 Liederen over de moord op Floris V (1296). Op weg naar een nieuwe editie

Abstract – The murder of Floris V, Count of Holland, has been sung of in many ways. Among the lyrics that survive, we traditionally distinguish a ‘longer’ and a ‘shorter’ version (the ‘shorter’ being an adaptation of the ‘longer’). Preparatory to a new edition of the ‘long’ lyric plus the later reworkings, this article discusses the tradition. The textual tradition of the ‘short’ lyric turns out to derive fully from Leiden, University Library, MS Ltk. 194 (second half C 15). Medieval users of this manuscript tried their pens by writing down some verses from the ‘short’ lyric from memory. A newly discovered manuscript – the so-called Jochems Manuscript (medio C 16) – contains an adaptation of the ‘short’ lyric of circa 1500, probably originating from Alkmaar. Two versions of the ‘long’ lyric were known so far, but now a third one can be added (published in 1699). An adaptation of the ‘long’ lyric was made by a rhetorician from Leiden circa 1600.
