‘Die in hun jeugd gedroomd hebben ¼ ’. Mannelijkheid en dichterschap in de negentiende eeuw
Abstract -- This article explores the relevance to literary historiography of a number of changes that hitherto have received attention mainly from family and political historians: the varying interpretations of the concepts of ‘youth’, ‘manhood’ and ‘masculinity’ since the end of the eighteenth century. The investigation gives rise to a revision of the ‘probleem-Beets’ (the case of Beets), a reassessment of Lodewijk van Deyssel’s essay ‘Over literatuur’ (On literature) and -- generally -- to the conclusion that literary periodicity, poetics and views of manhood and masculinity are more closely linked than would appear at first sight. The article concludes with some general remarks on gender and literary historiography.
