De viriele generatie van 1918

Abstract -- Young writers’ attempts at literary innovation during the period between the two World Wars, involved many poetical texts, literary programs and manifestos. Those have formed the basis of the image that literary historians gave of this period. In this paper the ideological purport of these texts is unravelled. It becomes evident that the young writers turned the literary climate of the years from 1918 into a battle-place, with the victory of masculinity over femininity at stake. For an adequate portrait of this period gender proves to be an indispensable instrument.
