Julius Caesar Scaligers Epidorpides in de Emblemata van Johan de Brune. Een substantiële schakel tussen Neolatijnse en zeventiende-eeuwse Nederlandse literatuur

Abstract -- The Dutchman Johan de Brune published his book of essays on human failings Emblemata of Zinne-werck in 1624, the year he embarked on his political career. Amongst the many writers he quotes in his emblems, the Roman Catholic humanist Julius Caesar Scaliger ranks first. In Scaliger’s collection of moral and religious poetry Epidorpides [Desserts] the pietistic Protestant found a kindred spirit. De Brune selected mainly Scaliger’s religious poems to support his own views on the recent political and religious strife in the Dutch Republic, as well as on general Christian and educational themes.
