kost ghij selver leesen, ick meen ick soude u wel meer schrijven’. Conditionele bijzinnen in niet-literaire zeventiende-eeuwse brieven.

Abstract -- Seventeenth-century handwriting by people who were not used to hold a pen, is from a linguistic point of view unique material since the syntactic description of Early Modern Dutch is for the greater part based on printed texts in literary and official language. In this article a comparison is made between preceding conditional clauses in literary texts and those in seventeenth-century letters of ordinary people. This comparison shows not only the resemblances but also the differences in word ordering, thus adding new data to our knowledge of Early Modern Dutch.
