‘Zulk een zoon’. Geeraardt Brandt over het leven van zijn zoon Gerard: een vergeten biografie
Abstract -- Geeraardt Brandt (1626-1685) is known as a poet, a historian and a biographer. This article deals with the biography which he wrote of his talented son Gerard (1657-1683): Het leven van Geerardt Brandt de jonge (1704), which so far has been overlooked by modern scholarship. My analysis demonstrates that this text is a passionate plea for religious tolerance, arminian thought and arminian identity. I furthermore discuss why this biography was not yet published in Gerard’s posthumous XXXII Predikatien (1685), but for the first time in Tien predikatien (1704).
