De Middelnederlandse schepeneed van Sint-Omaars (veertiende eeuw)
Abstract -- The Middle Dutch alderman’s oath of Saint-Omer (north of France) occurs in a register in the archives of Saint-Omer, where it is preceded by its French version. The text must be dated between +/- 1350 and 1361 and is the oldest such oath in Middle Dutch known so far. After a translation and a short excursus about the language situation in Saint-Omer in the Middle Ages and later on, we compare the French and the Dutch version. An analysis of both language and spelling characteristics leads us to the conclusion that the copyist seems to have been little accustomed to writing in Dutch.
