Abstract -- Books on the history of Afrikaans drama generally refer to the activities of a certain Dutchman, Adriaan van der Hoop Juniorszoon. In Dutch literary history, however, this Van der Hoop Juniorszoon is virtually unknown. Who was he and why did he write such venomous poems about the alleged shallowness, hypocrisy and bigottry of the Afrikaners? Retracing the steps of a forgotten author against the backdrop of postcolonial relationships between South Africa and the Netherlands.
