Over de thematische structuur van Couperus’ roman Metamorfoze
Abstract -- Metamorfoze, a novel by Louis Couperus, tells the story of the artist Hugo Aylva who finds no happiness, neither in his art nor in his life as a common man. The novel deals with a great number of themes, such as the aim of life, happiness, artistic talent, civil life, metamorphosis, appreciation and so on. In this article the author investigates the possible connection between these themes; he concludes that in this novel Couperus tried to escape from the melancholia and spleen so prevalent at the end of the 19th century.
