Een Nederlandstalige Fransman aan de Kaap, Charles Etienne Boniface en de Afrikaanse literatuur
Abstract -- Although he was French, Charles Etienne Boniface deserves an important place in the Afrikaans literature history. Not only was he the first writer to use Afrikaans in his work, he also exercised a large influence on the mentality of the South-African colonists of his time. He especially contributed to the development of the Hottentot’s stereotype in the course of the nineteenth century. This article will first of all shed some new light on Boniface’s life, in particular on his life before his arrival in South Africa. In the second place we will examine the influence his work exercised on later Afrikaans literature.
