Lambert ten Kates Aenleiding (1723): tiende dialoog: over de woordsoorten
Abstract -- In 1723, the Aenleiding tot de kennisse van het verhevene deel der Nederduitsche sprake was published, a folio edition in two parts, about 1550 pages in all. The book, written by Lambert ten Kate (1674-1731) from Amsterdam, gives among other things an impressive and original treatment of the etymology of Dutch and other Western European languages. In this contribution I pay attention to Ten Kate’s ideas on the parts of speech in Dutch, found in the Aenleiding. Although Ten Kate does not offer a complete grammar of the Dutch parts of speech, he has however formed original ideas on that subject and on language in general.
