Abstract -- Besides his activities as a poet, Dr. J. P. Heije (1809-1876) apparently desired to be a composer as well. He never received any education as a composer. In 1832, however, after several minor attempts, he decided to compete for a prize offered by the Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Toonkunst. He composed an overture and entre’actes for the tragedy of Gijsbrecht van Amstel by Joost van den Vondel. His contribution was judged by several composers and their assessment was very negative. After this disappointment, he gave up his aspirations as a composer.
