Van papier of uit het hoofd? De overlevering van een rederijkersrefrein

Abstract -- In this article, four sixteenth-century copies of a rhetorician refrain are compared in order to study how the text was transmitted. It has been assumed for a long time that texts by rhetoricians were transferred in written form only, in spite of the importance they attached to performance and recital. A reconstruction of lost copies and a comparison of all the variants indicate that at some point, this refrain might have been transmitted by memory.
