F. de Tollenaere
Etymologica: Sjouwen, Burrelen, nogmaals Paling
Abstract -- In 1891 F. Buitenrust Hettema made an attempt to elucidate the etymology of Du. sjouwen ‘to drag’, on the basis of seeuwen ‘to transport victuals to ships at anchor’ in Frisian Hindelopen. Since this theory was included in N. van Wijk’s etymological dictionary [1912], it has become generally accepted. It should however be abandoned, as its basis proves untenable.
The etymology of Mdu. Borlen, Burlen ‘to low’ by J. Verdam in part I of his MDu. dictionary [1885], viz. a metathesis of Du. brullen, proves impossible on chronological grounds.
