Zijn olla vogala Vlaams, of zit de Nederlandse filologie met een koekoeksei in (haar) nest(en)?
Abstract -- Ever since its discovery in 1931, the sentence hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan (etc.) has been regarded by Dutch and Flemish scholars as ‘the earliest scrap of Netherlandish that has been recorded in England’ (K. Sisam). Starting from the very first word (hebban), usually interpreted as an indicative 3 pl (vs. OE habbađ), they have tried to demonstrate the South West Flemish character of the sentence. A thorough re-analysis, however, shows that most forms could just as well be (Old) English, in particular Kentish -- no surprise at all given that the ms. stems from Rochester. At best, the text could be described as linguistically mixed.
