Ellen KrolBeets over ‘het populaire’ Abstract -- In the lecture ‘Het populaire’ (‘The popular’) Beets makes a stand against the many so-called popular writings, which are intended especially for the common people. He shows how the authors embarrassingly descend to the level of the populace in order to curry favour with them. The covert references to Potgieter’s Jan, Jannetje en hun jongste kind (‘Jan, Jannetje and their youngest child’) are numerous. Subsequently he contrasts this with his own Romantic view on folk art and finally he relates this view to his personal aversion to ‘insensitive’ learning, which he contrasts with ‘natural’ humanity.
