Henk Duits‘O deuchdgeurighe roos’. Machtelt van Velsen: een integere en karaktervolle melancholica Abstract -- In this article the character of Machtelt van Velsen in Hooft’s tragedy Geeraerdt van Velsen is seen as a melancholic. Until now she was mostly regarded as a hysteric. But her moving opening-monologue, as well as her further rôle throughout the play, shows that she suffers mentally, after having been raped by Count Floris. Her sufferings drag her through all the depths of melancholy, terrible visions included. At the same time we see that she has started a process of self-recovery from her mental disorder. In her guiltlessness and integrity she is the one true victim of fate in the play. TNTL 120-2 (juni 2004), 97-112 | ||||||||||
