Ton van Strien en Johan KoppenolEnig redmiddel? Abstract -- In Nederlandse Letterkunde vol. 8 (2003), p. 116-129, Marita Mathijsen appeals for a radical shift in Dutch historical text edition practice. For scholarly purposes, she argues, editions should be prepared according to he highest philological standards, as practised in the Monumenta literaria neerlandica series. For the general reader, however, radical translations into modern Dutch are presented as the only option, as (according to Mathijsen) mere modernisation of spelling and interpunction contribute too little to attract modern readers. In this article, the consequences of Mathijsens proposal are being investigated and a more conservative, ‘third way’ approach is defended. Outlines are given of the modernisation rules for early modern texts followed in the Delta series, and some futher suggestions are made to accomodate the general reader.
