Erik KwakkelHebban olla vogala in historisch perspectief Abstract -- Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Bodley 340, an Anglo-Saxon manuscript copied in the period 1000-1025, contains one of the few traces of Old-Dutch literature. The two lines of poetry were jotted down as a probatio pennae shortly before 1100. The manuscript in question has survived from St. Andrew’s cathedral priory in Rochester, England. This essay focuses on the scribe of the pen trial. Based on paleographical and historical evidence his presence in Rochester is explained: the scribe was most likely part of a group of monks from Norman abbeys, who entered the priory in 1083 after the new Norman abbot Gundulf of Bec had expelled the five Anglo-Saxon canons in the community.
