Badeloch: de constructie van een tragisch vrouwenpersonage
Abstract -- This article reconsiders the role of Gijsbreght’s wife Badeloch in Vondel’s tragedy Gysbreght van Aemstel. On this female character totally different critical views have been expressed: exemplary wife, or hysterical woman and unnatural mother. An analysis focalising on her shows that the actualisation by the spectator/reader of a wide range of tragic and epic intertexts concerning heroines (Andromache; Creusa; Louise de Coligny; Machtelt van Velsen) produces gender-determined expectations of Badeloch’s role in the plot and her ultimate fate. However she gradually outgrows these intertexts, staging her own model of femininity, at the edge of gender transgression.
