Hans BennisEen Duitse expansie Abstract -- The expansion of the diphtongh <ui> in the history of Dutch has been thoroughly described in Kloeke's most influential monograph De Hollandsche Expansie. A sociolinguistic model for language change and the expansion of phonological properties is proposed to account for the change from <oe>, via <uu> to <ui>. In this paper I discuss another change that has occurred in the same period, namely the introduction of reflexive pronouns in Dutch. The standard form zich(zelf) is of German origin. The German expansion of zich into the Dutch language area raises questions with regard to Kloeke's theory, especially since most present-day Dutch dialects prefer the possessive reflexive form zijn eigen 'his own'.
