Hans den BestenKloeke en het Afrikaans Abstract -- This article discusses G.G. Kloeke's contribution to Afrikaans studies. On the basis of historical and Indonesian data it is argued that Kloeke was right in assuming that Modern Dutch diphthongization had not run its full course among the early colonists yet. Kloeke's hypothesis concerning the Southern South Hollandic characteristics of the Cape Colonial founder dialect is defended against J. du P. Scholtz's criticism, although it is argued on the basis of Dutch loanwords in Indonesian, Sinhala, etc. that the ‘South Hollandic’ appearance of the phonology of Afrikaans diminutives need not be South Hollandic at all. Yet, more research is needed as well as an approach free of netherlandocentricism. TNTL 121-3 (september 2005), 211-224 | ||||||||||
