Overgezet voor het gebed. Latijnse hymnen en sequensen in het Middelnederlands
Abstract -- Until recently, little was known about the Middle Dutch translations of Latin hymns and sequences. This article offers a survey of these texts, starting by situating these Latin songs in their medieval context and proceeding by describing the genesis of hymn translations in several Germanic languages (German, English and Dutch). The discussion of different late medieval textual complexes which contain Middle Dutch translations of these liturgical songs -- such as the psalter of the Devotio Moderna, the lay breviary and other devotional manuscript types -- sketches an outline of the development, distribution and function of translations of Middle Dutch hymns and sequences.
